Networking is all about making and keeping professional relationships. It's the process of connecting with industry professionals, often outside of your immediate circle, to exchange insights, give advice, or even point you towards job opportunities.

Tips for networking successfully

Have a plan

"Before stepping into any networking event, it's a good idea to have a plan," says Becky. "Of course, you don't need to think about every last detail, but a bit of planning ensures your time is well-spent and you leave with valuable connections and insights."

"Thinking about how you will introduce yourself can set you up for success when you're trying to make a good first impression. It's not just about stating your job title; it's about conveying your passion and professional journey in a few sentences."

"Researching the event and its attendees will also give you a clearer picture of potential conversations. Identify people you believe would be valuable to connect with, whether it's because of their expertise, their company, or their role in the industry. Likewise, pinpoint those you'd like to learn from; every interaction can be a learning opportunity."

"You could even consider setting specific goals for the event. Do you aim to make five new connections? Or perhaps you want to gain insights into a particular industry trend? Having clear objectives will give your interactions purpose and direction."

Try to forget your agenda

"Make it your goal to be open and friendly and the rest will follow," says Becky. "Don't fire a million and one questions at someone to get more information from them, as this can come across as insincere and one-sided. Effective networking involves mingling and fostering genuine rapport, allowing both parties to engage, learn, and mutually benefit from meaningful interactions."

Stay connected

"It sounds simple, but keeping in touch with your new connections is crucial in networking, and, in today's digital age, it's easier than ever," explains Becky.

"Many people promise to stay in touch but don't follow through. By actively nurturing these connections, you stand out as someone reliable and genuinely interested in maintaining a mutually beneficial relationship. Plus, when an opportunity arises, they may just think of you."

"You could message them on social media, schedule a follow-up meeting, or send a quick text or email. You could even send them industry-related articles or news every few months to keep up the communication."

Talk to new people at events 

It can be tempting to stick to people you already know at events, especially if you've come with a group, but new faces open doors to fresh perspectives and ideas," suggests Becky. 

"These new connections may offer insights, collaborations, or resources that you wouldn't have encountered within your existing circle. You never know where your next valuable connection might come from! You could even set a goal of talking to four new people every hour when at an event. That means dedicating around 15 minutes chatting to each person, encouraging you to step out of your comfort zone."

Discover new connections online

"In addition to in-person networking, or if there are limited in-person events near where you live, utilise online platforms to expand your reach," advises Becky. 

"Join industry-related groups on social media, participate in webinars, and engage in discussions on platforms like LinkedIn. The digital landscape offers plenty of opportunities to connect with professionals in your field, even if you can't meet them face-to-face."

In fact, a study by LinkedIn found nearly two-thirds (61%) of professionals globally say online interaction can open up new job opportunities.

Offer to help your connections

"Networking is a two-way street, and one of the best ways to strengthen your connections is by offering your assistance to others in your network," says Becky. "This could be sharing your expertise, making introductions or simply being there to offer advice." For example, if someone in your network advertises a new job role, and you happen to know someone who is a perfect fit, take the initiative to make the introduction.

Becky explains: "By demonstrating your willingness to contribute to the success of your professional relationships, you not only build trust but also create a network that is more likely to reciprocate when you need support in the future. Remember, the stronger your network becomes, the more it benefits everyone involved."

Try to be confident 

"Confidence is a key ingredient for successful networking," says Becky, "It's, of course, easier said than done, but believing in your abilities and the value you bring to the table not only makes a positive impression but also attracts others to engage with you." 

"The more you attend networking events or reach out to others online, the more you'll find that your confidence naturally grows, making each interaction more effective and rewarding."
